Nairn Street Community Garden.

After extensive discussion with local residents and other interested parties in the Dalmuir area the final plans for the Nairn Street Community Gardens are well on the way to completion.

Finalised were the features which will be incorporated into the gates that lead to the gardens. Our creative development officer met with residents to discuss a theme for the gardens. Based on the moon, designed features will add the final touches to make the project unique in keeping with our other CEL projects.

The garden will become a pleasant feature and a desirable community asset.

The gardens in their original condition were featureless and bland as shown in this set of illustrations. New planting will bring splashes of colour and trees in a variety of shapes and colour will add to the overall effect.

Removal of the top soil and fence feature on top of the" mound" were the first acts of regeneration.

Work begins to remove much of the earth and reshape the landscape into a smoother and more pleasing shape. Slowly curved mounds of earth know as 'whale-backs' will replace the harsh hard shapes making the gardens more pleasing to the eye.

Steven Gilmour a local lad was employed on site. Wherever we can we will always encourage local employment by creating job opportunities for local people.

Stephen stays in the Nairn Street complex and working on the site is of special significance. " The Housing Association is trying hard to change things for the better for the people around here and I am proud to be involved. "

The association were delighted to gain the bricklaying expertise of Frank Flanagan.

Frank, a master craftsman is renowned for his skill in building curved features from brick. A visit to the site will give credibility to his reputation and skill.

At 68 years of age, Frank has never considered retirement...such is his love for his trade.

As the gardens develop we will update the site showing its development until completion.
